Meet your Legislator Chris Swedzinski on the SMSU Campus
The Legislative event held on the SMSU campus was a great opportunity for the students who attended to meet their legislator, Chris Swedzinski. Chris Swedzinski is the Minnesota State Representative for the Southwest Minnesota area. Thanks to our Legislative Specialist Damilola, we were able to have him come to our campus and be our main speaker.
The event was at noon and a delicious lunch was provided to students. It started with a short presentation by our Campus Organizing intern, Ola, who informed students about the work of Students United, our issue campaigns, and the different ways they could get involved with the organization. It should be noted that on the same day, the Minnesota State Board of Trustees was having a meeting on the SMSU campus. The Minnesota State Board of Trustees is composed of 15 members, appointed by the Governor, who are the decision makers behind the policies of the Minnesota State System. Several trustees attended our event along with Students United Chair, Faical Rayani, and Vice Chair Lexi Byler. During Ola’s presentation, we were all very excited to have them surprise us and join the event. Subsequently, after Ola’s speech was Professor David Sturrock spoke. Dr. Sturrock is a Political Science professor at SMSU, and provided students with an introduction to Minnesota Legislature.
Another unexpected moment, and wonderful surprise, was to have Minnesota State Chancellor Devinder Malhotra and the Chair of the Board of Trustees Michael Vekich, walk in and say a few words to the students. As it turns out, this was all made possible thanks to Professor Sturrock, who had met with them earlier that day and invited them both to come to the Legislative event, and meet some SMSU students.
Chris Swedzinski was then able to educate students more about the state legislature, and the work that is being done for the Southwest region. After the speech, there was a Q&A, which enabled students to ask pertinent questions, and engage conversations with their speaker.
This event was a great opportunity for the SMSU students to learn more about state government, especially the House of Representatives, directly from a member of the House. It is indeed important for them to know who represents them at the state level, what the representatives do, and what is being accomplished. Our committee members are thankful to our distinguished guest speakers and surprise appearances, and the students in attendance, who helped make this event truly incredible and memorable.
