State Chair Feature | 2018-2019 Organizational Objectives
written by | State Chair Kayla Shelley
I am excited to announce that Students United has picked this year's organizational objectives! Last year, the board decided to select objectives for our directors to focus on, and that is how we saw the successful passage of Affirmative Consent at the Minnesota State system office, textbook affordability plans on each campus, and more universities signing the carbon commitment. With that in mind, we decided to take objectives a step further, and set them for the entire organization rather than just the Board of Directors.
The objectives our board unanimously selected are
Create, or renew, campus-wide textbook task forces on each campus.
Obtain a two-thirds level funding from the Legislature and a fully-funded tuition freeze. We will do this by achieving full student participation in Advocacy Day, having one advocacy board action per month, and working on initiatives to increase voter turnout on each campus.
Create a systemwide point of contact for undocumented student legal services
Each campus develop an excused absence request form. Have Minnesota State provide a sample holiday/observance calendar to act as a resource to the campuses.
Each of these came from our delegates, issues identified in our student platform, and recommendations from last year's board. The first step we took was to suspend the formal operations of the meeting, and just have a conversation about what issues we are passionate about that our organization has the ability to tackle. We narrowed down the long list of things we were excited about with input from staff, and then selected the objectives.
The entire board seemed excited for this year, and ready to take on the tasks ahead. I’m excited to partner with everyone within Students United, and all Minnesota State students to accomplish the objectives this year!
