Job Title:         Director of Public Relations             Status: Full-time, exempt

Reports to:      Executive Director Salary Range: $50,000 - $72,659

Position Summary: 

The Director of Public Relations is responsible for leading the development of strategic communications programs, media relations, and all internal and external communications. As the point media relations person in the organization. Students United is seeking an individual who can develop relationships with key media stakeholders and ensure the organization is seen as the go-to source for student input and opinions on higher education policy. The internal and external communication includes developing website content, planning and managing social media and public relations campaigns, developing email campaigns, and creating print and digital promotions to support organizational objectives. 

The Director is also a part of the organization’s Advocacy Team, which leads execution planning of student-driven objectives and legislative goals, and co-supervises the Assistant Director of Advocacy and part-time staff on the Minnesota State university campuses.


Position Responsibilities:

  1. Develop, Advise and Prepare Communications

    • Lead Students United’s media relations practices, including developing relationships with media, pitching stories, and ensure the organization is partaking in the higher education conversations happening at local, state and national level

    • Manage digital voice of Students United, publish content to all digital channels and serve as the digital expert for the organization

    • Develop, advise and prepare Students United communications, including internal and external publications, special events, digital newsletter, and website

    • Articulate vision for visual materials or projects to creative freelancers/contractors (photographers, graphic designers, printers, etc.)

  2.  Develop Strategy Communications

    • Develop, implement and maintain visibility plan

    • Assist in the implementation strategy of legislative and organizational goals

    • Assist in strategic planning outcome goals

    • Provide message and issue development around events and campaigns, including fundraisers, scholarships, and outreach

  3. Oversee Public Relation Budget and Promotions

    • Advise on the public relations budget for each fiscal year

    • Oversee all purchases made within public relations budget, including ordering of promotional materials, merchandise store, awards, advertisements and other promotional uses

  4. Supervising and Mentoring

    • Co-supervise the Assistant Director of Advocacy

    • Hire and supervise seven part-time student public relations specialists

    • Hire and supervise one part-time communications intern

    • Develop and assist in workshops or trainings at conferences and with campuses

  5. General

    • Advocate on behalf of the students of the seven Minnesota state universities to administer and promote student-initiated programs in higher education and in legislative efforts.

    • Attend meetings on behalf of the association

    • Attend Students United conferences, meetings, and related events.

    • Other duties as directed by the Executive Director.


Experience and Qualification Requirements:

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in a related field (Communications, Public Relations, English, etc.)

  2. 3+ years of related job experience (preferably in media relations, digital media, & writing)

  3. 2+ years of supervising experience

  4. Ability to travel across Minnesota for events and to visit university campuses

  5. Willingness to work some weekends

  6. Strong verbal and written communications skills

  7. Comfort with public speaking

  8. Ability to work with diverse groups
