Equity & Inclusion Specialist


 

Students United is a statewide student organization with a full-time staff who helps students advocate at the system, state, and federal level. Each campus has its own Campus Staff of students who help further the organization’s mission of advocating for ALL students.

Position Summary:

Students United is looking for a person who is passionate about student-led advocacy and diversity, equity, and inclusion to join our team of part-time student staff members on campus. This position is designed for a student who is interested in diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in student advocacy and is willing to work on advancing Students United’s related priorities. The Equity & Inclusion Specialist informs students on their campus about Students United, recruits students to become active within Students United, builds partnerships that advance equity and inclusion priorities, and organizes events and actions focused on advancing Students United’s equity, and inclusion platform and objectives.

This is a part-time, temporary staff role open to students enrolled at any one of the seven Minnesota State Universities  

Reports to: Director of Equity & Inclusion (in consultation with the Campus Coordinator)

Responsibilities:

  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of Students United’s mission, vision, and values, diversity platform, equity-related board objectives, and other relevant priorities and stances.

  • Uphold the Students United mission, vision, and values with the highest standard of integrity.

  • Attend weekly campus staff meetings and provide progress updates to the Campus Coordinator.

  • Submit a weekly Equity and Inclusion Report to the Campus Coordinator.

  • Check in regularly with Director of Equity & Inclusion.

  • Serve as a source of information regarding issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion on campus and in the system with campus staff members and the general student population.

  • Create, maintain, and expand partnerships on campus with students, faculty, staff, and organizations with mutual interest in Students United’s mission, vision, values, platform, and objectives related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

  • Recruit volunteers to help with equity-focused events and actions on campus.

  • Increase Students United visibility on campus through a variety of means including performing class/club raps, tabling, or other equity, diversity, and inclusion outreach tasks.

  • Manage equity, diversity, and inclusion outreach and events.

  • Design, propose, and host at least two (2) Equity and Inclusion events on your campus each year.

  • Attend all Students United conferences, meetings, retreats, orientations, and trainings as required.

  • Serve on the Students United Diversity Advisory Committee during Students United conferences.

  • Participate in major equity, inclusion, and diversity events such as trainings, Power in Diversity, and more.

  • Other duties as assigned by Director of Equity & Inclusion and/or Campus Coordinator.

Qualifications:

  • Enrolled at your state university for the entire 2019-2020 academic year.

  • Availability to travel outside of campus for Students United orientations, conferences, and events.

  • Strong professional communication skills.

  • Excellent organization and time management skills.

  • Ability to communicate the importance of equity, diversity, and inclusion and student advocacy.

  • Commitment to equity and inclusion and the ability to work with others from diverse backgrounds.

  • Willingness to learn new subject areas.

  • Ability to work independently and remotely.

  • Passion for advocating for state university students and the mission of Students United.

Preferred Experience:

  • Studying within a field focused on equity, diversity, and inclusion or is highly interested in the issue.

  • Previous experience with Students United.

  • Previous experience with event planning on campus.

Compensation and Time Requirements:

  • $10-$10.50 per hour.

  • Maximum 115 hours per academic year.

  • Length of employment: August to May.

  • Attend Summer Orientation: August 8th-9th.
