Students United is a state-wide student organization with a full-time staff who helps students advocate at the system, state, and federal level. Each campus has its own Campus Staff of students who help further the organization’s mission of advocating for ALL students.
Students United is looking for a person who is passionate about student advocacy at the legislative level to join our team of part-time student staff members. The Legislative Specialist informs students on their campus about Students United, recruits students to become active within Students United, builds partnerships with key campus stakeholders, and organizes events and legislative actions to influence higher education policies. This position is designed for a student who is interested in a variety of student issues, from affordable textbooks to increasing support for undocumented students, and is committed to advancing Students United’s priorities and platform on campus.
This is a part-time, temporary staff role open to students enrolled in one of the seven Minnesota State universities.
Reports to: Director of Government Relations (in consultation with the Campus Coordinator)
Develop a comprehensive understanding of Students United’s mission, vision, values, platform, board objectives, and legislative agenda.
Uphold the Students United mission, vision, and values with the highest standard of integrity.
Attend weekly Campus Staff meetings and provide progress updates to the Campus Coordinator.
Submit a weekly Legislative Specialist report to the Campus Coordinator
Check in regularly with Director of Government Relations.
Serve as a source of information on campus on campus regarding Minnesota State System policies and State and Federal legislative matters and how they align with Students United’s platform and legislative agenda.
Create, maintain, and expand partnerships with students, faculty, and staff who can help advance Students United’s vision of becoming a more effective influencer of higher education policy and laws.
Recruit volunteers to help with legislative events and advocacy actions.
Increase Students United’s visibility on campus using a variety of media tools, promotional items, performing class/club raps, tabling around campus, and performing other outreach tasks.
Manage legislative and civic engagement outreach and events.
Design, propose, and host at least three (3) Legislative Events on your campus each year.
Attend all Students United conferences, meetings, retreats, orientations, and trainings as required.
Serve on the Students United Legislative Affairs Committee.
Participate in major legislative events such as GOTV and Advocacy Day.
Other duties as assigned by the Director of Government Relations and/or Campus Coordinator.
Enrolled at your state university for the entire 2019-2020 academic year.
Availability to travel outside of campus for Students United orientations, conferences, and events.
Strong professional communication skills.
Excellent organization and time management skills.
Ability to inspire others to take action on legislative issues of higher education.
Commitment to equity and inclusion and the ability to work with others from diverse backgrounds.
Willingness to learn new subject areas.
Ability to work independently and remotely.
Passion for advocating for state university students and the mission of Students United.
Previous experience with Students United.
Previous experience planning events on campus.
Studying political science or other relevant field of study.
Time Requirements and Compensation:
$10.00-$10.50 per hour.
Maximum 115 hours per academic year.
Length of employment: August to May.
Attend Summer Orientation: August 8th-9th.
