Public Relations Specialist


Students United is a statewide student organization with a full-time staff who helps students advocate at the system, state, and federal level. Each campus has its own Campus Staff of students who help further the organization’s mission of advocating for ALL students.

Position Summary:

Students United is looking for a person who is passionate about student advocacy and communication to join our team of part-time team of student staff members on campus. This position is designed for a student who is interested in mass communications and the use of communication techniques to amplify the voice of Students United on campus and across the state.

This is a part-time temporary staff role that is open to students enrolled in one of the seven Minnesota State universities.

Reports to: The Director of Communications (in consultation with the Campus Coordinator)


  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of Students United’s mission, vision, values, platform, board objectives, and legislative agenda.

  • Uphold the Students United mission, vision, and values with the highest standard of integrity.

  • Attend weekly campus staff meeting and provide progress reports to Campus Coordinator.

  • Submit a weekly Public Relations Specialist report to the Campus Coordinator

  • Check in regularly with the Director of Communications.

  • Serve as a source of information to your Campus staff regarding outreach methods and metrics.

  • Create, maintain, and expand partnerships on campus with students, faculty, staff, and organizations with mutual interest in Students United’s mission, vision, values, platform, and objectives.

  • Recruit volunteers to help with marketing, photography, or other outreach and awareness tactics for Students United.

  • Increase Students United’s visibility on campus using a variety of media tools, promotional items, performing class/club raps, tabling around campus, and performing other outreach tasks.

  • Manage communication, promotion, and outreach efforts for your Campus Staff in order to inform students of issues and policies that impact them and how Students United advocates on their behalf.

  • Attend all Students United conferences, meetings, retreats, orientations, and trainings as required.

  • Promote Students United’s brand via its various programs, initiatives, and events.

  • Utilize the Director of Communications and other Students United staff as resources for communications matters.

  • Raise awareness of all Students United events on campus to maximize attendance.

  • Increase subscriptions to Students United email notices.

  • Manage your campus’s Facebook page and contribute to Students United’s larger social media networks.

  • Update social media and blog tracking sheet weekly.

  • Other duties as assigned by Director of Communications and/or Campus Coordinator.


  • Enrolled at your state university for the entire 2019-2020 academic year.

  • Availability to travel outside of campus for Students United conferences and events.

  • Strong professional communications skills.

  • Excellent organization and time management skills.

  • Ability to inspire  others to take action on issues of higher education.

  • Commitment to equity and inclusion and the ability to work with others from diverse backgrounds.

  • Willingness to learn new subject areas.

  • Ability to work independently and remotely.

  • Passion for advocating for state university students and the mission of Students United.

Preferred Experience:

  • Studying within a communication field (Mass Communication, Communication, Marketing, etc.) or highly interested in communication.

  • Previous experience with Students United.

  • Previous experience planning events on campus.

Compensation and Time Requirements:

  • $10-$10.50 per hour.

  • Maximum 115 hours per academic year.

  • Length of employment: August to May.

  • Attend Summer Orientation: August 8th-9th.
