State Chair Feature | Getting to know Kayla Shelley

written by | Kayla Shelley

My name is Kayla Shelley, I am currently in my fourth year at St. Cloud State University where I am majoring in Communication Studies with an emphasis in Persuasion and Advocacy and minoring in Political Science. I first came to SCSU as a PSEO student when I was 17, and lived in the infamous 13 floor building Sherburne Hall. Since then I’ve enjoyed my time at school serving in different roles in our Student Government association, and spending a lot of time in the Communications Studies department.

I am incredibly excited to have been elected to serve as Students United’s State Chair. I am most looking forward to getting to connect with students across the system, celebrating their successes, and working together to lessen the heavy burdens falling on students in higher education today. Over the last two years, Students United has provided me with so many opportunities I had never imagined having as a college student. When I first joined the organization as a sophomore I was a legislative specialist on our campus committee, and last year I served on the board of directors.

I’m so honored to get to continue in the organization in this new role. Last year, we decided to select three objectives the board could focus on, they were textbook affordability, affirmative consen, and university carbon commitments. This year I get to continue that trend, and work with the board to pick objectives they are energized and committed to accomplishing.

Some fun facts?

I have a cat, his name is Frazz, he’s the most important man in my life. I love board games, hanging out in Atwood on campus, and Caffetto Café on mpls (open until 1am, and there is an arcade downstairs!)

I can’t wait to connect with and serve students this year! #StudentsUnited
