Become an Officer of the Students United Board
Officers of the board play a critical role in the day-to-day operations of Students United. As a student-led organization, the officers work with fellow students on the Board of Directors to ensure Students United is supporting Minnesota State University students.
By being elected State Chair, Vice Chair, or Treasurer, you're part of a tradition of student leaders working to make Minnesota a better state for all students.
Officer positions are open to all domestic and international students. Positions take place remotely, with paid travel throughout Minnesota and to Washington D.C.
Officer positions are open to any undergraduate or graduate student at one of the seven Minnesota State Universities.
In addition to paid travel throughout the state, officers are paid $17.50 an hour.
State Chair works 20 hours weekly
Vice Chair works 15 hours weekly
Treasurer works 10 hours weekly

All prospective candidates must be able to attend the April 9th candidate forum and must submit
a complete application. Failure to meet either criteria results in automatic elimination.
Candidates must be available for in-person Officer Trainings, which typically take place in July.

POSITION DESCRIPTIONS

Consult with the Executive Director on the implementation and coordination of Students United proposals/programs.

Be responsible for the administrative duties of Students United’s Board of Directors, including calling and chairing meetings, the coordination and dissemination of information. The State Chair works closely with the Executive Director to ensure that relationship between the Board and personnel is meeting expectations.

Ensure that a written agenda is submitted to all members of the Board of Directors at least ten (10) business days in advance of any scheduled meeting or included in the call of the meeting, if the call is sent fewer than ten (10) business days in advance.

At the direction of the Board of Directors, schedule Board of Directors meetings, events, and conferences.

Serve as the primary spokesperson for Students United.

Serve as Students United’s representative to the Office of Higher Education Student Advisory Council.

Be responsible for presenting the Students United report, both verbally and in writing, at the meetings of the Board of Trustees and its committees.

Meet monthly, during the academic year, with the Chancellor of Minnesota State according to the Chancellor’s availability.

Work to achieve the Board of Directors’ objectives, program outcomes, and vision of the organization.

Attend all official functions of Students United.

Draft documents, known as Position Papers, outlining the rationale behind every Students United position, in conjunction with the Students United staff

Make appointments to commissions, task forces, study groups, search committees and other groups that impact students and Minnesota public higher education

Other duties as assigned
All students are welcome to apply, but this position would be ideal for an experienced student leader looking for their next challenge. The State Chair can expect to learn more about the inner workings of a nonprofit, public policy, and higher education. We highly encourage all students, no matter their experience, to apply for officer positions. All students are considered.
FAQ
Officer elections are overseen by a select number of Students United Board Members. These Board Members review the applications, moderate the Candidate Forum, and make their selection for the next cohort of officers.
Each candidate needs to submit their complete application, and must be able to attend the Candidate Forum in order to be considered.
