The North Star Promise (NSP) Scholarship program is a game-changer for Minnesota students, opening doors to higher education by eliminating the barrier of tuition costs. Students who complete the FAFSA, and whose families are Minnesota residents making less than 80k a year, are given free tuition to all University of Minnesota campuses, and all Tribal Colleges. They must also complete either the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the Minnesota Dream Act Application.

The North Star Promise helps cover up to 100% of tuition after other financial aid has been applied. However, it does not cover expenses such as housing, food, books, or other supplies. There is no age limit for receiving free college tuition through North Star Promise, and family or household size are not factors in determining eligibility for awards.

The North Star Promise is not linked to any specific program or major; it allows you the freedom to achieve your educational dreams. Whether you’re aiming for a four-year degree, a two-year degree, learning a trade, or earning a certification, the North Star Promise supports your goals. Evening and part-time classes are also included. Whether you're balancing work, family, or other commitments, there is flexibility for you. To qualify, students must be enrolled and take at least one credit. The North Star Promise is available to both new and returning students who meet the eligibility criteria. This means it’s never too late to start or continue your educational journey. With free tuition and no obligations, you can create a future you’re excited about.

The only academic requirement for continuing to receive free tuition is to meet the school's Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) standards, which means staying on track to obtain the intended degree or certification.

The North Star Promise is not a loan. Individuals do not need to repay the tuition funding they receive. After completing their education, students have the freedom to work and live anywhere they wish. There are no requirements to live or work in Minnesota or for a specific company or state agency.

The North Star Promise is important in helping students who might otherwise struggle financially to access college education. By providing free tuition, it opens the door to higher education, empowering students to pursue their long-term career goals.
