On Friday, March 28th, an international student from Minnesota State University – Mankato was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at their off-campus apartment.

The student was in good academic standing with Minnesota State University – Mankato,

and at the time of their detainment, they had a valid student visa.

It remains unclear why the student was detained by ICE. They are currently being held an hour away from Mankato in Albert Lea, Minnesota.

Students United firmly opposes the unjust detention of international students.

All students, regardless of their immigration status, are afforded certain unalienable rights under the United States Constitution. We are deeply disturbed by the blatant infringement of international students’ rights.

Students United is working with the student’s family, allies in the state and federal government, and MSU-Mankato to assist the student in this difficult time.

We urge all international students:

1.) Be aware of your surroundings.

2.) Know your rights. You can print out cards to carry here. You have certain rights when detained or asked for information by ICE agents.

3.) Always let friends and family know where you are, especially if you live off campus.

4.) Contact your university’s International Students Office and find out what they are doing to protect students on campus.

5.) Stay informed on changes regarding country travel bans, the status of your visas, and any changes to your country's standing with the United States.

6.) Have you heard anything on campus? Has a student been detained by ICE? We'd like to hear from you. You can contact us here or email a staff member directly. See our full staff directory here.
